Mental Health Awareness for families - part 1 - Top 10 resources

We know this is an especially challenging time for everyone and so we are putting together a series of articles with recommended links and resources around mental health themes especially for families.  Future articles will talk about subject matters such as staying safe online, self esteem, mindfulness for families and more.

1. Every Mind Matters is the Public Health England and NHS project that aims to empower people to manage and improve their mental health.  This information includes a brand new and regularly updated section giving advice on how to maintain your mental wellbeing during this time as well as tools and practical information.  This NHS link provides direct links for urgent help and useful charities that can be contacted.

2. The BBC Worklife scheme has crowdsourced this excellent article with straight forward advice on how to include mental wellbeing into your everyday life whilst dealing with many competing demands in this current climate

3. The excellent Booktrust website has put together this list of suggested children's books based around mental health and wellbeing as well as advice for parents

4. YoungMinds are the UK's leading charity for children and young people's mental health.  Their website includes details of a parental helpline as well as resources and links to help parents support their children with specific advice related to the current Coronavirus situation

5. The mental health charity Mind provide information and support to anyone of any age struggling with mental health concerns with information about different mental health problems, guides to support and services and an information hub for children and young people.

6. MindEd is another government recommended educational resource for all adults on children and young people's mental health.  Parents do not need to register to access resources which include advice and information from trusted experts and will help you to understand what problems occur, what you can do to best support your family and how to take care of yourself.

7. The Childhood Bereavement Network has excellent downloadable guides and links to help support bereaved children and young people during this time

8. Place2Be have pulled together advice on how to answer specific questions that children may be asking.

9.    Hey Sigmund has a useful article containing general advice on how to talk to children and teenagers about difficult world events, not just those relating to the current situation.

10.  Newsround have put together this series of videos aimed at older children to discuss mental health issues as well as some updated information for this year's Mental Health Awareness Week
