As food banks in Cheltenham have suffered a drop in donations since the Coronavirus lockdown began, the Mayor of Cheltenham, councillor Roger Whyborn, has announced a new fund to support them. The Mayor’s Food Bank Fund will provide much-needed funding to outlets including Cheltenham Food Bank, Springbank Community Foodbank and Familyspace (see below for full list).
“As some residents’ financial situation has become extremely difficult, we’ve seen demand at local food banks going up by more than three times during the Coronavirus lockdown,” says Cllr. Whyborn. “Many people have also found it difficult to donate to food banks during the crisis, sometimes because they cannot leave home themselves. This fund aims to raise vital funds to ensure these services can continue to help individuals and families across Cheltenham.’’
Anyone wishing to support the fund can donate in one of three ways: an online donation to www.cheltenham.gov.uk/payments and choose ‘Mayor’s Food Bank Fund’; buying Cheltenham Lottery tickets at www.cheltenhamlottery.co.uk and search for Foodbank (or phone 01242 396124) - 50% of ticket sales go to The Mayor’s Food Bank Fund, and you could win up to £25,000; send a cheque payable to Cheltenham Borough Council and send it to The Mayor’s Parlour, PO Box 12, Promenade, GL50 1PP. Please write ‘Mayor’s Food Bank Fund’ on the back and your address.
