Two schools pioneer School Streets this November

Two Gloucestershire primary schools have been chosen to take part in a pilot scheme, School Streets, designed to prioritise those walking or cycling on the school run over those using cars. From Monday 2 November, areas outside Warden Hill Primary School in Cheltenham and Tewkesbury C of E Primary School will be closed to traffic to provide extra space for social distancing and a healthy, safe environment.

Expected benefits of the scheme at Durham Close, Cheltenham, and Rope Walk, Tewkesbury, the two areas chosen, include improved road safety and air quality, as well as reduced congestion, while encouraging families to adopt a healthier lifestyle. The zones will operate from 8.15am to 9.15am and 2.30pm to 3.30pm Monday to Friday. Blue Badge holders, residents and emergency vehicles will still be allowed access.

Gloucestershire councillor Nigel Moor, cabinet member for environment and planning, says, “We’re always keen to make school travel safer and easier. That’s why we’re looking carefully at School Streets schemes. They have the potential to improve air quality and cut congestion but we need to see how they work in practice.”

School Streets will run for 12 to 18 months before a final decision is taken on the scheme, with six monthly reviews.Current thumbnail
