Gloucestershire’s primary schools stay open in Tier 4
The government’s decision to move all regions of Gloucestershire into Tier 4 today, 31 December 2020, means the closure of most family attractions in the county until restrictions are lifted. However, Gloucestershire’s primary schools are expected to reopen as normal for the start of spring term on Monday 4 January, despite some primary closures in London and the South East.
Tier 4 measures require all households to stay at home to prevent the spread of covid-19, including its new highly infectious variant widely reported in the media over the last 10 days. But education and childcare remain key exceptions according to official government advice.
“You can leave home for education related to the formal curriculum or training, registered childcare, under-18 sport and physical activity,” says gov.uk. Also allowed are supervised activities for children which allow parents or carers to work, seek work or take part in education or training.
Informal childcare for children aged 13 and under is still permitted as part of a childcare bubble formed with one other household.
Attractions forced to cancel or postpone events include The Everyman Theatre, who has contacted ticket holders about its productions 'A Christmas Carol' and 'Tweedy's REDUCED Pantomime' and Cotswold Farm Park's Enchanted Light Trail. However, Batsford Arboretum, Moreton-in-Marsh, remains open to local visitors in their household bubbles.
With the roll out of the Oxford University/AstraZeneca vaccine next week, in addition to the Pfizer vaccination approved before Christmas, it is widely hoped the pandemic will be brought under control by Spring 2021, although resumption of public gatherings, including the reopening of family attractions, must await government approval.
In the meantime, locally organised online activities continue to be available including On:song’s singing sessions, Hum, which start on 4 January and The Barn’s ‘Peter Pan’ until 3 January.
