Pupils kept home again as third lockdown announced
Gloucestershire primary schools will only be open for the children of key workers and vulnerable children from tomorrow, Tuesday 5 January, following Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s decision to place England into a third national lockdown. Most pupils will resume home schooling similar to that of spring last year, with lockdown likely to last for the whole of the first spring term. Mr Johnson implied that he was aiming for schools to be able to return after the February Half Term, which ends on Sunday 21 February but insisted all changes depended how well the virus was controlled.
The news follows rising daily infections of nearly 58,800 across the UK, much of it from the new variant of covid, an increase of 17,400 compared to last week. The government faced growing pressure from councils, trades unions and teachers anxious that maintaining full school attendance was neither safe nor viable with the higher risk of transmission and growing staff shortages.
Primary Times Gloucestershire is keen to hear from primary schools with stories of how schools and pupils are finding ways to succeed in lockdown.
