The Midlands Air Ambulance charity, which serves Gloucestershire and five other neighbouring counties, has started work on a new airbase and headquarters on the Shropshire/Staffordshire border which is expected to significantly benefit patients in the region.
The new facility, in planning for more than four years, is designed to enhance the charity’s emergency medical service, providing a purpose-built environment for clinical staff, simulation training, and space for two helicopters. It will complement the charity’s existing air ambulance-led service across the six Midlands counties, at the service of anybody unfortunate enough to suffer a traumatic injury or illness.
The charity, celebrating its 30th birthday this year, continues to face a number of challenges, including the annual rising demand for on-scene advanced patient care, the increased complexity of patient needs, and the current lack of training facilities for critical care paramedics and doctors.
According to Hanna Sebright, chief executive of Midlands Air Ambulance Charity, “This new facility will ensure the critical care team are equipped to treat increasingly complex cases and enhance our daily lifesaving service, featuring a purpose-built clinical training facility and more suitable environment for our aircrew when they return from complex, stressful and challenging air ambulance missions.”
The new facility is expected to open in 2022.
