Families can have a fun, free day out on Wed 26 Oct along a walking trail created by the Cotswold Canals Connected (CCC) project, as well as an open day with guided tours at the charity's Western Depot in Stonehouse, which explains how boats can move uphill. The Flight of Locks walking trail runs from Newtown Lock in Eastington and Westfield Bridge in Stonehouse, with CCC volunteers situated along the walking trail to provide walkers with the history of the locks and how they work. Stalls run by the volunteers and members of the Stroudwater Navigation Archive Charity provide information about the locks' recent restoration. A map of the trail is available online and can be picked up from one of the CCC team.
Children can take part in guided tours at Western Depot in 30 minute time slots. Open to the public for the first time, the workshop is run by volunteers and works to maintain and restore the canal. The Depot has metalworking and carpentry facilities which manufacture and repair anything the canal requires.
Canal project director Chris Mitford-Slade says, "This is a fantastic opportunity to learn about the flight of locks being restored along the canal at Eastington, and find out how to get involved with volunteering. It is also a rare and unique chance to experience behind-the-scenes of the canal restoration and see first-hand the hard work of the volunteers."
Flight of Locks walking trail and open day runs from 10am to 4pm on Wed 26 Oct. Booking only required for the workshop tours.
