Local schools take part in Gloucester's Festive Lantern Procession
Children from six local schools take to Gloucester’s historic streets for a festive lantern procession inspired by the literary illustrations of Sir John Tenniel, original illustrator of several of the 'Alice' stories by Lewis Carroll, on Sat 19 Nov. The event is part of Gloucester City Council’s Bright Nights programme and features Ola Samba, a local samba drum band, and the Gloucester Gladiators Scout Band. The schools taking are Cooper’s Edge School, St. James’ CofE Junior School, Upton St. Leonards CofE Primary, Grange Primary Academy, Hillview Primary School, and Clearwater CofE Primary. Each school has worked with a local artist to recreate an iconic character from Sir John Tenniel’s work including the Cheshire Cat, the Mad Hatter, the Queen of Hearts, and the White Rabbit.
The procession starts on the corner of Kimbrose Way Triangle at 4:45pm and weaves through the centre of Gloucester as the city’s Christmas lights are turned on before finishing at Gloucester Cathedral for a carol service.
Andy Lewis, Gloucester City Council’s cabinet member for culture and leisure says “This is a fantastic event which is very popular and every year marks the start of the festive season. As part of the Bright Nights programme, it brings colour and light to our city and I hope as many people as possible will come down and see the wonderful creations.”
