Poppy Run returns to London on 26th October

The Royal British Legion is encouraging people across London to lace up their trainers this October and take part in a Poppy Run to help support service and ex service personnel and their families.

Taking place on 26th October 2019 the Poppy Run is a 5k course at Victoria Park. Poppy Run’s are open to people of all ages and abilities, participants can choose to run, jog or walk the course.

Lewis Peacock, Events Manager for The Royal British Legion said; “Our Poppy Runs are a fantastic way for people to show their support for the Legion and get a little bit of exercise at the same time. The event’s are great fun to be involved in but, most importantly, by taking part and fundraising you’ll be helping to provide vital services and support for service personnel, veterans and their families who are struggling through hardships, injuries and bereavements.

“However you choose to get around the course, whether you run, jog or walk with a fourlegged friend, you are helping the Legion transform the lives of people in need within our Armed Forces community.”

The Legion offers life-long support to the Armed Forces community in a number of ways including providing crisis grants, researching the changing impact of blast injuries on the body, lobbying the government on key issues and delivering specialist dementia care, sport and art based recovery programmes.

The Legion recently provided support to 37-year old David Street who encountered difficulties after he left the Royal Navy, leaving him struggling with unemployment, money problems and issues with social isolation.

With help from the Legion, David found a place to live whilst the Legion also paid for essential furnishings and provided a dedicated Benefits, Debt and Money advisor to help sort out his finances.

He said: “The response from The Royal British Legion has been unbelievable. It’s like having a family I never knew I had – nothing has been too much trouble.

“There’s still a little way to go, the Legion are still working through my debts, but there’s light at the end of the tunnel as they’ve represented me and helped me to restructure everything. I feel so different, there’s no negativity and no problems. I can never thank the Legion enough for everything they’ve done.”

Registration costs £15 for adults and £7.50 for 7-17 year olds with a minimum fundraising target of £50. Children aged six and under can take part for free. The fee includes an official finishers medal and Royal British Legion t-shirt. Anyone that raises over £100 will receive a special medallion.
