‘Reduce, reuse, recycle!’ say Burntstump Seely C of E Academy pupils

Children at Burntstump Seely Church of England Academy have put all of their recycling tips into a performance for their parents with the help of a theatre company and waste management company, Veolia.

The project, called ‘Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle’ launched by Veolia, is aimed at reducing waste, -and with the help of theatre company, Konflux, children at the school were able to put together a show for parents and fellow pupils detailing all of the ways they can help in the effort.

Children who took part said that putting together the show, helped them to think more about how they and their families can do more to help the environment. Mordecai said, “After it, I went around my neighbourhood picking up plastic bottles.” Alistair said he was shocked by waste statistics. “I learned that people throw away enough rubbish to fill up the Forest football stadium in one day!”

Now children are taking the messages in to every aspect of their life. “It helped me recycle,” said Jahneil. “I got some snacks from the supermarket and the guy asked if I wanted a plastic bag and I said no. I am going to reuse my own from now on.”

Fellow pupil Yolande said she felt the same way. “I told my mum about what we were talking about and about the play and she is using recyclable bags. My mum knew about not recycling lids of bottles and tubs.”

Pupil Lilia said she took her renewed enthusiasm for recycling home to share with her family. “We were eating blueberries and mum was going to put the tub in the bin, but I shouted ‘No’ to her, and to put it in the recycling bin. I told her all about my school day and we all know what to recycle now!”
