BUCKS PUPIL DESIGNS HEALTHY NEW FRUIT IN NATIONAL COMPETITION

A Buckinghamshire primary school pupil has been awarded a top prize in a national competition after inventing a healthy new fruit for children.

Abby Hermione Milne from The Stoke Poges School was a national runner-up in the ‘Design a Healthy New Food’ competition, organised by Discovery Education and Switzerland’s Alimentarium Foundation. Open to primary schools across the UK, the competition asked pupils to design a nutritious food, meal or snack, and create a fun advert to promote it.

Abby, 9, impressed judges with her design for ‘The Abbot’, an exotic furry-skinned fruit from the Caribbean island of Cuba. Packing her new fruit with an alphabet of vitamins, the Year 4 pupil added fun rainbow coloured seeds to appeal to young eaters.

As part of her prize, Abby’s advert will feature on the award-winning Discovery Education Espresso website. Accessed by thousands of schools as a daily learning resource, the advert will encourage children everywhere to make healthier eating choices. Abby has also been presented with a special certificate and goody bag.

Rani Makkar, Abby's teacher at The Stoke Poges School said: "Our pupils really enjoyed taking part in the competition. Their designs for new healthy foods showed great imagination, and they learned a lot about nutrition along the way. We're very proud that Abby was chosen as a national runner up and looking forward to seeing her advert online!"

Christine Major, Director of Educational Partnerships at Discovery Education said: “It’s never been more important to educate children about nutrition, and to help them make healthy choices. We were really impressed with the calibre of competition entries and especially the creativity of Abby’s entry. We hope that our partnership with the Alimentarium Food Museum will ignite children’s interest in the science of eating and bring nutrition to life in a fun and accessible way.”

The competition was launched as part of a 3-year partnership between Discovery Education and Switzerland’s Alimentarium Foundation, delivering nutrition resources to primary schools across the country via Discovery Education Espresso’s award-winning digital learning service. Exciting new content launching this year will help children to learn about food sustainability and the environment.
