Matilda at Thirty

An exhibition of new Quentin Blake illustrations opening on World Book Day 7 March

Wrestling champion, world traveller, astrophysicist? To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the publication of Roald Dahl’s much-loved story about a brave little girl who loves books and hates bullies, (particularly her horrid headmistress Miss Trunchbull), Quentin Blake was asked to imagine what Matilda would have become as an adult.

Come and see Quentin Blake’s eight new versions of grown-up Matilda, each inspired by one of the extraordinary talents she displays in the story. Alongside these, we’ll have prints of the original Matilda illustrations from the book.

Imagine what Matilda might be doing now, share your own dreams and aspirations for the future with us and explore Matilda’s talents in snippets from the original manuscript. Matilda shows us that no matter how small and powerless you feel, it’s possible to stand up for what you believe in, change your circumstances for the better and write your own story!

This World Book Day, Matilda features on the £1 voucher given out to 15 million children across the UK and Ireland. Find all the details at www.worldbookday.com. When you visit the Museum, you can exchange your voucher for one of the World Book Day special editions including titles by Malorie Blackman, Lauren Child and Rick Riordan.

Admission to the exhibition is free with Museum admission.
Museum admission: adults £7; children 5-18 £4.70; concessions £4.70; family ticket £22.60.
Advance booking is highly recommended for school holiday periods. Call 01494 892192 or visit
