Eye-boggling arts for all the family as Family Arts Festival returns this half-term
The Get Creative Family Arts Festival has brought together thousands of events up and down the country including music, theatre, circus, art, backstage tours and film screenings. Over 1,000,000 family members have participated so far and this year is set to be bigger than ever. From Halloween themes and Night at the Museum events to world music tours in rural locations, from west end musicals to puppet shows, there really is something for everyone to enjoy.
This year Family Arts Festival have joined forces with BBC Get Creative, a year-long initiative aiming to boost creativity in the UK, as well as celebrate the millions of people already doing something artistic and creative every day.
Getting creative as a family, and joining one of the festival events is more than just about being entertained. Shared family activities across generations give everyone the opportunity to take some time out of their day to day lives, to craft something, to marvel at something unusual, to be transported into a different world, to see or hear something thought-provoking, and to discuss it afterwards.
With many free or low-cost events, Family Arts Festival is especially keen to encourage people to try out an arts event for the first time. All events are high-quality and share the very best that the UK arts scene has to offer. Making everyone feel welcome is key, whether it’s at a walking event, a family rave or dance class, a conventional theatre show or concert, a drawing or craft event, or a camping festival.

Michael Morpurgo, former children’s laureate and award-winning author of children’s books, including War Horse, returns as patron and said: “I am delighted to be Patron of the Get Creative Family Arts Festival again this autumn. Now in its third year, there is a huge range of events on offer: from music to theatre, dance to art. There is sure to be something to delight and share with all members of the family across the generations.”
“An early cultural experience for children in whatever form - opera, ballet, music or art is a wonderful thing because it opens the door to a life-long experience, a life-long enjoyment. I encourage families to make a day of it together - or a week - exploring the exciting events that are happening all around the UK this half-term.”
There are booking details, together with suggested age-range and ticket prices, listed with each event on the Family Arts Festival website. There are lots of free events. Plus, there’s even an eye-boggling app so that you can make your own family portrait and join the party online.
