Derby Arts Festival is an annual contest that gives talented amateur performers the chance to shine. Now in its 109th year, more than 1,000 young people competed in this year’s music, dance and drama talent contest.

Ockbrook School Choir comprises 20 students from throughout the Senior School. Judges at Derby Arts Festival showered students with praise as the choir walked away with three awards, including the ‘Hymn Singing Award, ‘Secondary School Gospel Choir Award’ and the coveted ‘Shenton Memorial Cup’.

Meanwhile, 17 year old Jane Beal celebrated a hat trick of medals in the Vocals Section. The Year 13 student scooped the ‘Chorister Solo’ award with her performance of Quilter’s Now Sleeps the Crimson Petal, as well as the ‘Constance Pemberton Memorial Cup’ in the Young Ladies/Gentlemen's Solo Class and the ‘Jazz/Blues Standard Solo’.

Conductor Mr Swindell, Director of Music at Ockbrook School, said: “Once again our choir has performed to the highest levels. Everyone should be extremely proud of their achievements. Special mention must go to all the Year 13 students, including Curran Doherty, Beth Hampshire and Jane Beal, for all their hard work over the years!”

Elsewhere in the Instrumental Classes, Ockbrook pupils were awarded 24 podium positions. Julie Yun, aged 16, placed 1st for her outstanding drumming performance; Sophie Cox, aged 10, placed 1st and 3rd for her two beautiful harp performances, while Edric Garner, aged 9, was awarded the highest mark from all of Tuesday and Wednesdays' daytime classes, achieving a score of 91 in his second Piano Class.

Ockbrook School Piano Teacher, Jane Ford added: “Many congratulations to all pupils who competed in the Derby Arts Festival. Over the course of Tuesday May 2nd, Wednesday May 3rd and Thursday May 4th 2017, Ockbrook School had a total of 39 entries in the Instrumental Classes, and came away with four 1st prizes, eleven 2nd and nine 3rd places - a truly exceptional achievement!”
