Pet lovers invited behind the scenes at Derby Pet Hospital open day
Local families, animal lovers and budding vets are invited to a fun-filled open day when Derby PDSA Pet Hospital throws open its doors next week.
Taking place on Saturday 5 August, 10am to 4pm, visitors will have the chance to go behind the scenes of the busy hospital on London Road, to see where life-saving pet operations are carried out, as well as fun activities for all the family.
Sally Frith, Pet Hospital Lead at Derby PDSA Pet Hospital, said: "If you’ve ever wondered what goes on inside one of our PDSA Pet Hospitals, now is your chance to find out.
“There will be plenty going on for the whole family, with tours of the operating theatre and x-ray suite, as well as fundraising activities such as dog shows, animal displays, raffles and fete style stalls.
“Our open days always used to be so popular but because of the pandemic we haven’t been able to have one in more than three years. We’re so excited to open the doors to the public again!
“It will give people the chance to learn more about the charity, which has been saving the lives of pets every single day for over 100 years.”
The event will raise funds for Derby PDSA Pet hospital, which cost over £1.2m to run in 2022 and doesn’t receive any government funding.
Sally added: "We’re most looking forward to giving our in-depth pet hospital tours, offering animal lovers an insight into how we diagnose pets’ illnesses, what happens in an operating theatre and how we help poorly pets recover after surgery.
“There will be hands-on demonstrations and children will even be able to find out about working as a vet or nurse at PDSA!”
Sally added that one of the most asked about parts of the day is the dog show.
“There will be a few different categories throughout the afternoon including Perfect Puppy, Golden Oldie, Best Trick, Best Biscuit Catcher and of course, Best in Show,” she explained.
“It’s £1 per entry and you can enter beforehand by contacting the team or on the day itself. We can’t wait!”
Derby PDSA Pet Hospital treats sick and injured pets in need, providing a vital lifeline for local owners who are struggling to afford vet care for their beloved pets.
The dedicated team in Derby saw 7,994 pets in 2022, carrying out 16,452 consultations, 702 surgical operations, 1075 x-rays and 1068 ultrasounds.
