Katie and the Mona Lisa Reader's Review

Primary Times reader review quote

An excellent introduction to art using music, song and physical theatre this is an enchanting performance for a wide age range.  Jake (9) loved it and said his favourite part was when St George tripped up the dragon.  Anna (7) especially enjoyed seeing the Mona Lisa come to life and step out from the painting. Ardent fans of the book will not be disappointed with this faithful and imaginative adaptation.

Katie and the Mona Lisa

The popular book by James Mayhew is brought vividly to life in this clever adaptation from Planet Theatre Productions. From the moment the red bus rolls into London town with an excited Katie and her Gran on board the scene is set for a magical journey through Renaissance art.  As Grandma retreats to the café for a cup of tea Katie is thrilled to find the paintings come to life before her very eyes.

On loan from the Louvre, the Mona Lisa has lost her enigmatic smile and the cheerful Katie is determined to help her find it.  Pursued by Reg the officious security guard, they embark on an exciting tour of the gallery and encounter the flirtatious St George complete with Princess and Dragon, the entertaining Three Graces and the  winged Lion of St Mark among others.  The hard working actors are adept at using the fabulous stage set to recreate the eminent paintings.  The intrepid and enthusiastic Katie is wonderful as is the humorous Reg who has the audience screaming in delight as he enlists them in his search for the missing duo.
