Madama Butterfly Review

Madama Butterfly

This production feels very intimate, matched with the warm welcome given by the French Institute - offering children a vive la fringe badge and cake samples. The show takes place in a tent within the gated Randolph Crescent Gardens opposite the Institute building, where children can freely run around before the show starts.  It's a small cosy venue and has a contemporary set - a black background with contrasting white fanned screen and outfits.  With some clever lighting, making beautiful shadows and projected film, the production is visually attractive for the even the youngest of children. Nathalie Cornille herself is stunning and her dancing compliments Puccini's music, making this show very captivating - almost hypnotic.  With various costume changes and clever use of simple props such as confetti, the show moves quickly enough for young children.  Nathalie clearly loves what she does and you can't help but enjoy watching her.  The highlight was a projection of Nathalie dancing with a mirror image of herself, which was exquisite. It was all a thoroughly enjoyable experience and I highly recommend it as an introduction to opera and dance for children.  My daughter Jess (7) said "I really liked the music and the dancing"...."the time went really quickly".....and "can we see some more ballet shows". Thank you Nathalie Cornille!

Suitabe for ages 3 and above.
