Soweto Spiritual Singers: The African Dream Reader's Review
Soweto Spiritual Singers: The African Dream
Primary Times reader quote
“Their acting and dancing were so good that I could follow it even though they didn’t sing in English”
- Katie aged 12
You can’t help but clap your hands, sway to the beat and smile as you listen to the beautiful sound and watch the dancing of this vibrant group of 14 singers/dancers and 5 musicians with drums, electric guitars and keyboard.
The Soweto Spiritual Singers of Vilakazi Entertainment Group bring their “African Dream” and appeared to captivate the whole audience with their energy. Mia, aged 7, enjoyed the 55 minute long show and said “I liked the colours of their beautiful costumes”. Occasionally, a narrator spoke in English and helped to explain their African dream of freedom. There were references to those who fled from troubles in Nigeria for jobs digging for gold and better prospects in Johannesburg. You might expect a group with the word “spiritual” in their name to be completely virtuous but a couple of them over indulge in the party night-life! Nevertheless, they sing like angels throughout and succeed in fully engaging and moving the audience. This show is recommended to anyone any age who enjoys a spectacle and appreciates a truly joyous sound.
