Mavis Sparkle Primary Times Children's Choice Awards Review
Mavis Sparkle is a delightful, gentle show aimed at children 4 and older. The younger ones in the audience sat entranced, and my 9 year old daughter loved it. We meet Mavis Sparkle on her last day of her cleaning job, and as she ponders what the future might hold she shares stories of her childhood, her dreams, and her hopes for the future.
Mavis is hugely endearing, able to tell a story with her expressions and body language, and the imaginative props and occasional magic trick make the show even more special. There are some encouraging messages in the story: follow your dreams, be brave, it's important to have someone (or, in Mavis's case, some hedgehog) to love, but none of this is heavy-handed and the atmosphere is always dreamy and magical.
The set is wonderful. Mavis' cleaning trolley is full of tiny doors, drawers and hidden secrets that are gradually revealed, much to the delight of the audience. The mobile mop bucket is an entertaining touch, and there is some lovely shadow puppetry, all emerging from the trolley. By the end of the show it seems we have seen everything this magical trolley has to offer, but there is one final surprise left!
Highly recommended for families looking for a little bit of magic and gentle humour this Fringe.
Children's Quotes
Doris (9) said "I really enjoyed it. I liked the silhouettes and I liked how she talked about her memories. She was really kind. I hope she does more shows, I would have liked it to be longer. I was glad she didn't make anyone join in."
