The Friends of Hereford Cathedral are hosting a free lecture in College Hall on Wednesday 8 January at 11am, to give a taster of their activities and to help people find out more about the organisation.
The Friends of Hereford Cathedral are a voluntary organisation, formed in 1932 in association with the Dean and Chapter of Hereford Cathedral. The group is passionate about caring for the cathedral and preserving it for posterity and gives grants to the cathedral for various projects and activities. Alongside their work to support the cathedral, the Friends also run an extensive events programme which includes lectures, day visits to places of interest and even residential trips both in the UK and further afield.
On Wednesday 8 January at 11am in the cathedral’s College Hall, The Revd Canon Dr Maureen Palmer is giving an illustrated lecture on the Chained Library and its Treasures. The lecture will in particular focus on The Nuremberg Chronicle, a beautiful and innovative early printed book. The lecture is completely free to enable people to come along and get a taste of being a member of the Friends of Hereford Cathedral.
Dr Joy Roderick, Chair of the Friends of Hereford Cathedral, commented: “The primary function of The Friends of Hereford Cathedral is to support our beautiful cathedral in the long term through our membership and events. However, the friendship within our group goes much further than just supporting the cathedral building, as we are a welcoming network of members who enjoy being together. You do not have to worship at the cathedral or even live in Hereford to join the Friends. Annual membership costs just £20 (£30 joint) – please do get in touch if you’d like to find out more.”
Iris Howlett, Events Secretary of the Friends of Hereford Cathedral, said: “We run a busy and vibrant events programme throughout the year which includes day trips and residentials, as well as talks on a wide range of topics. Joining the Friends is a fantastic way to meet new people, whatever your interests are and we hope that the lecture on 8 January will inspire some of our guests to join the Friends.”
The Revd Canon Dr Maureen Palmer’s lecture on the Nuremberg Chronicle is free of charge to all, but booking is essential. Please email friends@herefordcathedral.org to book your place.
