England international joins health and well-being event for Deaf

International footballer Jamie Clarke is the star guest at a health and well-being event in Wychavon in September.

Jamie, captain and star striker of England men’s Deaf football team and professional model, is continuing to drive forward our campaign to highlight the importance of these issues for the Deaf community.

A programme including talks and presentations along with a wide range of specialist advice is being offered from 10.30am-2pm on Monday, 15 September in the Committee Rooms and Council chamber at Wychavon’s Civic Offices, Pershore, WR10 1PT.

Wychavon-born Jamie, who is profoundly Deaf, has become a leading advocate for disability awareness in sport, having had to navigate the challenges of the hearing world and discrimination. He is captain of the national Deaf team having first being capped at the age of 18 in 2008.

Jamie said: “We know there can be many barriers for Deaf people, and accessing health and wellbeing services can be especially challenging - whether it’s visiting a GP, going to a leisure centre, or seeking support.

“In Wychavon, the largest district in Worcestershire, organisations like the council, GP surgeries, and charities such as Sensory Matters are working together to better understand and meet your needs. They are here to listen and help make your experiences with local services better. Come along and help us shape services that truly support your health and well-being.”

Jamie will be sharing his inspiring journey and will be available to answer questions while encouraging visitors to engage with services present on the day including which will be supported by BSL interpreters:

Local GP practices

- Health van offering free health checks

- Hearing Link and Sensory Matters – showcasing equipment and support for hearing loss

- NHS Acute Hospitals Engagement Lead

- Meet the Herefordshire and Worcestershire Fire and Rescue Fire Service

- Healthwatch

- Citizens Advice

- Mind, Coventry, Warwickshire and Worcestershire

Cllr Dan Birch, Wychavon’s Executive Board Member for Leisure, Health and Wellbeing, said: “Research nationally has shown that Deaf people have poorer access to health services and health information and events such as these are aimed at redressing this.

“Everyone is welcome to attend, whether you’re Deaf, hard of hearing, a family member, carer, or simply interested in learning more, come along and tap into the health and wellbeing support available in your community.”
