Forest School
Forest School has become a popular learning programme in primary education over the past decade and is founded on the belief that children learn through discovery, exploration and curiosity. Children go out in all weathers, all year round to investigate and experience the natural world through practical activities
Qualified Forest School educators ensure that the children’s interests along with the varied natural resources in the woodland are used to stimulate creative thinking, problem
solving and skill development from an early age. A study by the Forestry Commission identified positive benefits of Forest School activities as: Confidence; Social Skills; Language and Communication; Motivation and Concentration; Physical Skills; Knowledge and Understanding. Teacher Jane Elson set up and has been running the Forest School programme in 2012 at St Joseph’s In The Park.
“The world outside the classroom offers a wonderful opportunity to play and learn in a stimulating environment which helps developing minds,” she says. “I have observed that children taking part in Forest School are more relaxed. Children who may lack confidence in a classroom setting often thrive outdoors as a new set of opportunities opens to them. Important ‘life skills’ such as teamwork, risk management, independent learning and emotional intelligence are just some of the benefits gained from woodland activities.” Children at St Joseph’s In The Park enjoy outdoor learning all year round in the school’s woods and beautiful parkland setting near Hertford.
Independence with Kumon
At your local Kumon Study Centre the aim is to develop students into confident, independent learners.
With 60 years of experience, Kumon enables children to take on challenges independently and to confidently approach new work. One of the main principles of the Kumon Method of Learning is to develop independent learning skills in all students.
The Kumon Maths and English Programmes take students beyond their school level, providing new topics they have not come across in their education. This compels them to develop new learning strategies to deal with unfamiliar work. The strategies they develop are not just instilled in them whilst they are with Kumon, the independence they gain is something that may stay with them for life. Kumon develops children through the acquisition of independent learning skills, rather than being taught in the conventional sense. Each child becomes equipped with the ability to learn for themselves so they do not have to rely on the skills and knowledge of others. They are able to apply these skills to all their school subjects and outside of their education as well. Kumon believes that learning is always for the long run.
The individualised maths and English programmes enable each student to progress to an advanced level, above their school grade level, at their own pace. They develop lifelong study skills and a passion for learning, as well as the confidence to complete their work independently. Visit www.kumon.co.uk
