Let’s make music accessible for everyone: how one UK charity is bringing music making within reach

Music has the incredible power to bring people together, lift spirits, boost confidence, and unlock joy, no matter your age or background. That’s the belief at the heart of Music for All, a UK charity working to make music-making accessible to everyone.

Founded nearly three decades ago, Music for All has been providing support to individuals and communities by making sure that financial hardship or social disadvantage doesn’t block the opportunity to make music. Over the past five years alone, the charity has awarded more than £430,000 in cash grants, donated hundreds of instruments and equipment to individuals, schools, and community groups, and offered thousands of free ‘Learn to Play’ experiences across all four countries of the UK.

What does Music for All do?

The charity’s mission is to support disadvantaged communities and individuals in experiencing the far reaching joys and benefits of music making by:

• Donating instruments to individuals, schools and community groups;

• Awarding cash grants to support the costs of equipment, tuition or other music making essentials;

• Organises a free ‘Learn to Play’ initiative annually, giving people of all ages and backgrounds a chance to try out instruments or make music in other ways.

How can I help?

Music for All receives no government or arts council funding, and relies entirely on the generosity of donors and fundraisers. If this sounds like something you’d like to support, whether you are parent/carer, teacher, friend or community member, there are many ways to get involved:

• Make a donation or become a Champion. You can make a one-off gift or set up a regular direct debit to support the charity’s work by clicking here.

• Fundraise. From bake sales to sponsored walks, concerts to fun-runs, you can fundraising for Music for All. The charity offers a free fundraising toolkit full of ideas and step-by-step guidance to help you get started here.

• Give back through everyday activities. If your employer participates in Payroll Giving, you can donate directly from your pay before tax. Alternatively you could raise funds simply by shopping online, using services such as online shopping donation platforms - no extra cost to you. Find out more here.

By giving time, funds, or simply helping to spread the word, we can all play a part in ensuring music remains a source of connection, creativity, and joy for everyone.
