Pupils at Spring Grove have been enjoying membership of a new club - one of the wide range of extra-curricular activities offered at the school. Chicken Club launched at the start of the Autumn term with the arrival of an Eglu coop and three chickens.
The first priority, after settling the chickens into their new home, was to name them! A school-wide competition revealed both imagination and ingenuity with suggestions including Pom-pom, Heggety, Nugget, Disco, Fluff Puff, Jane Aust-hen, Princess Lay-la and Marshmallow. The eventual winners (picked out of a hat) were Rosemary, Doodle and Daisy.
Meanwhile all the children at Spring Grove have been learning about chicken behaviour, and how to keep Rosemary, Doodle and Daisy fit and healthy, drawing on the expertise of Spring Grove parents from both farming and veterinary backgrounds.
Looking after the Spring Grove chickens requires both consideration and care - two of the school’s core values. Members of the Chicken Club take turns feeding and watering the chickens, and cleaning the Eglu. In doing so not only are they learning great life skills, they are also connecting with nature with all the positive impact this can have on emotional wellbeing.
