From plant to plate: WWF-UK launch a homegrown school recipe competition

Does your school have any budding young chefs and gardeners who like a challenge? Then WWF-UK's brand new Green Ambassador recipe competition, Plant2Plate, is for them.

In partnership with Alpro, WWF-UK is inviting children from primary schools across the UK to cook up a tasty dish with fruit and vegetables grown on their own school grounds. The top 50 winning recipes will be in a recipe book and the overall winner will receive £1000 to spend on gardening or cooking equipment in school.

WWF is searching for schools like WWF Green Ambassador Champion School, Wicor Primary School, Hampshire, a great example of a school growing and cooking with fruit and veg grown at school. Their school grounds include allotments, woodlands, wildflowers, herb and fruit plants and a tropics border.

Head teacher of Wicor Primary School, Mark Wildman said: “At Wicor Primary School we grow a lot of our own food which the children harvest for cooking or for sale in our organic veg box scheme. We also have bees that we hope will soon be producing honey, all of which provide first hand experiences for the children to plant, nurture, and cook with local produce.”

The competition is part of WWF and Alpro's wider Plant2Plate campaign, which will run throughout the year. The campaign aims to create awareness of the principles championed by WWF's Green Ambassador scheme, by inspiring primary school children to make their schools greener and encouraging them to reduce energy, grow their own food, discover wildlife and reduce waste.

Karen Gates, who leads the WWF Green Ambassador campaign said: "Food production and distribution, along with deforestation and land-use change for agriculture, are responsible for 30% of the UK's CO2 emissions and contributes to the loss of biodiversity. If we adapt our diets slightly, by eating more plant-based foods, moderating meat consumption and reducing waste, we can make a positive difference to our health and the planet."

Schools should enter Plant2Plate by 5pm on the 18th December 2015 and send their recipe by email to greenambassadors@wwf.org.uk or by post to Green Ambassadors Recipe Competition, WWF-UK, The Living Planet Centre, Rufford House, Brewery Road, Woking, Surrey, GU21 4LL.
