Charley Boorman helps build schools for remote children in Cambodia with United World Schools
TV adventurer and motorcycle enthusiast Charley Boorman has teamed up with UK charity United World Schools (UWS) to help provide education to underprivileged children in some of the most remote regions of Cambodia. Charley recently spent a week in North East of Cambodia helping to build new schools and spending time with the local children.
Charley and UWS are seeking to transform the future of 200 children in the remote village of Tae Le who have no school to attend and are trapped in poverty. Together they will be working on a campaign to build and run a new UWS Community School for the children of Tae Le from 2016.
Star of award winning TV series ‘Long Way Round’ with Ewan McGregor, Charley Boorman is a passionate supporter of various causes and has supported numerous charities for many years. Also publicly dyslexic, Charley believes that everyone has the right to attend school no matter what their background. After struggling through school himself, Charley credits a successful life to a strong and encouraging education. By supporting UWS he hopes to raise the profile of this life changing charity, which is solely dedicated to bringing schools and education to remote areas in the world, and hopes that others will also understand the importance of everyone having the opportunity to learn and attend school.
Charley said “It’s exciting to have some small part to play with this organisation. I see this and my other work with the likes of UNICEF as a crucial way to ‘put back’ into the world – a world which I’ve had the opportunity to explore”.
UWS creates educational opportunities for children living in remote and poor regions. The charity is driven by the global mission to help reach children that do not receive even the most basic education. By early 2016 UWS will have been successful in building over 40 community schools, providing an education for over 10,000 children. Their aim is to by the end 2019 have reached over 50,000 children and young adults and ensuring that they can read, write and count.
UWS Founder Chris Howarth said “Charley’s recent visit to Cambodia was great fun. We visited many of the communities we support. Through the simple opportunity of being able to go to school, we see children’s lives being transformed. It’s great to have Charley’s support for the next steps of our journey”.
