Family Fun for Everyone at Go Canoeing Week!

If you’re looking for a new hobby for the whole family to enjoy, or perhaps you’re already a canoeing pro hoping to share your passion with your loved ones, National Go Canoeing Week will host a whole heap of canoeing and kayaking activities to wet your whistle! Taking place from Saturday 28th May - Sunday 5th June, make sure you get this date in your diary. Go Canoeing; the Olympic inspired British Canoeing initiative aims to get everyone out on the water having fun, no matter what their ability or age. So leave your preconceptions at the door and get involved, you can be as adventurous or as chilled as your heart desires!

With last year’s Road to Rio target distance of 24,901 miles well and truly smashed, we decided to make this Olympic year bigger and better and aim to collectively get everyone paddling 30,000 miles. With over 400 clubs and centres across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland running activities and events there will be something for everyone all over the UK. Whatever you take part in, everyone can log on to the Go Canoeing Week website to submit the individual miles they paddle to help us reach the target.

Not sure if canoeing is for you? Then come along to one of our Starter Sessions to get a real feel for what paddling is all about. Just turn up and we will provide all of the equipment needed and you can still contribute your mile paddled to our total target mileage. Alternatively, you can take on one of our Challenge Paddles to take in the beautiful scenery at your own pace, whether it’s a one, three or six mile paddle you fancy, the whole family can get out on the water for some quality time together. Everyone who takes part in one of our Challenge Paddles will receive a Go Canoeing medal for their efforts.

If you’re looking for a fun summer’s day out to entertain all of the family, then head down to Flagship venue Lee Valley White Water Centre to try out the fab events taking place over the weekend. We know this may be too far for some people, so we will be hosting a whole heap of other nationwide Events and Guided Tours so keep your eyes peeled for what will be on it your area. Slap on the sun screen, rustle up a picnic and come and join the fun!

Jenny Spencer, Go Canoeing Development Manager, said “Go Canoeing Week aims to get everyone of all ages and abilities onto the water, having fun, clocking their mileages and really getting a feel for the sport. The great thing about canoeing is there is something for everyone, whether you take part as a family, or have been paddling for years and want to keep challenging yourself. It’s the perfect opportunity to see all there is to offer in a relaxed environment with instructors on hand to show you the ropes, and keep everyone safe”.

We look forward to seeing you there, come along and get involved! Nothing to lose, new passion to gain!
