Wartime biscuits: baking messages and remembering The Somme

On 1st July in 1916, one of the biggest and costliest battles of the First World War began: The Somme. This year Red, White and Blue Day, a national fundraising campaign for schools, will be remembering this and other battles of 1916.

A little known fact from the war is that biscuits made on the frontlines were used to pass messages between friends or sent home to the soldiers’ families. Soldiers also often carved and decorated the biscuits to make souvenirs of their time in the Army.

To commemorate the Battle of the Somme, why not get your pupils to bake their own biscuits and decorate them with icing or write messages on them, whilst teaching them about the events of 1916. We’ve found this simple recipe here, but feel free to get inventive and try your own!
