Channel X's award-winning 'So Awkward' commissioned for a third series by CBBC

Channel X, one of the UK’s leading comedy and entertainment specialists, has been commissioned by CBBC to produce a third series of the award-winning children’s sitcom So Awkward, via their Salford based arm Channel X North. The second 13 x 30 mins’ series was filmed last summer in Manchester and returns to television screens this summer.

Alan Marke, Managing Director of Channel X, said: “So Awkward came about when an opportunity arose to develop one of our adult comedy scripts into a children’s project. We’re thrilled that the series has been such a hit for CBBC with a third series having just been ordered! We wanted to create a smart comedy with quality writing and acting that doesn’t talk down to its audience and we’re really proud of what we’ve achieved.”

So Awkward is a comedy about three socially awkward friends Lily, Martha and Jas. While other girls are going to parties, netball practice and sleepovers, this inseparable trio are busy with chess club, homework and Friday nights in watching documentaries. In spite of their ups and downs, they are learning that it’s not only ok to be different, it’s important.

Production company for the series, Channel X, are currently celebrating their 30th year anniversary of creating cutting-edge, award-winning programmes for a global audience. The independent company produces uniquely British content and has worked with the leading comedy talent in the UK for the last three decades, including BBC Four’s BAFTA award-winning Detectorists, BBC Two comedy Hebburn and the fantastically dark Snuff Box. Headed up by Managing Director Alan Marke and Director of Programmes Jim Reid, the company specialises in creating distinctive and high-quality scripted, broken and narrative comedy, comedy-entertainment formats and gameshows. They are currently in development with Comedy, Drama, Animation and Documentary projects for all major UK broadcasters.

Jim Reid, Director of Programmes at Channel X, said: “Having spent the last 30 years specialising in comedy formats for adults it’s great that we can use our expertise to develop an award winning children’s sitcom. Because children’s shows are ordered in blocks of 13 it means there is a lot more work to get your teeth into. The dynamic on So Awkward is much more like a US team writing show, which is different for us and exciting.”

So Awkward was created by Julie Bower and Produced by Sally Martin for Channel X North and commissioned by Cheryl Taylor at CBBC. Series 2 returns to the channel this summer.
