RSPCA Assured launches cooking contest for kids Judged by Celebrity Masterchef finalists

Entries are now open for Junior Compassionate Cook - RSPCA Assured’s cookery video competition for six to twelve-year-olds - supported by Co-op and Primary Times.

Backed by BBC One’s Celebrity Masterchef finalists -  Andi Peters and Liz McClarnon - Junior Compassionate Cook is now in its second year and has been launched in a bid to help children make the connection between the food they eat and the animals that produce it, in a fun and engaging way.

Andi Peters, one of the competition judges, explains: "I'm delighted to be judging RSPCA Assured's brilliant Junior Compassionate Cook competition again this year.

"Getting kids cooking and having fun in the kitchen is really important.

“This competition encourages them to think about where food comes from and the welfare of farm animals.

"I hope lots of kids enter this year and I can't wait to see their videos!"

How to enter
Entering is easy. Contestants just need to film themselves making their favourite recipe using RSPCA Assured and Fairtrade ingredients and upload them via www.rspcaassured.org.uk/cook  

There are two categories: People’s Choice - voted for by viewers online -  and the Judges’ Choice.  

The judges are looking for charismatic children with a talent for creating simple dishes. Judge Liz McClarnon says:

"I really enjoyed watching the kids' videos in last year's RSPCA Assured Junior Compassionate Cook competition and I really can't wait to see this year's entries!

"It's fantastic to see kids so excited about cooking and that they care so much about the welfare of the animals used to produce their food. It will set them up for a lifetime of happy cooking and good, ethical eating.

"Good luck everyone and get cooking!"

The winner of each category will receive an iPad and Junior Compassionate Cook trophy. Four runners-up will receive a medal.In addition, each winner and their school will receive a fun range of children's cookware. All winners also get a subscription to the RSPCA's animal action magazine.

RSPCA Assured is the RSPCA’s food label which can be found on eggs, meat and salmon. RSPCA Assured means the product has come from a farm inspected to strict RSPCA welfare standards.  The label covers different types of farms including free-range, organic and indoor as long as the RSPCA’s standards can be met.
