OXFORD’S RYE ST ANTONY SCHOOL & SMOOTHWALL TACKLE THE BIG ONLINE ISSUES ON SAFER INTERNET DAY
As part of Internet Safety Day this year, leading web filter provider and internet safety company Smoothwall is at Rye St Antony School in Oxford, teaching pupils and parents the importance of online safety.
Smoothwall will be taking three assemblies for Years 5 & 6, Year 9 and parents & students, tackling topics such as the potential risks of social media, stranger danger, online gaming, phone usage, Facebook check-ins and many more.
The sessions will be interactive and give children the opportunity to get involved in a video competition to illustrate the Safer Internet Day slogan ‘Be the change – unite for a better internet’, a picture competition to create a scene of a safe internet and various quizzes to keep children engaged. Emoji faces will even be provided for students to respond to questions and handouts will be available to take away.
Claire Stead, Online Safety Expert at Smoothwall and the company’s ambassador who will be hosting the assemblies and workshops, will be talking to children at Rye St Antony about the importance of communication when faced with potential risks faced online. Children and parents will be given practical tips and information on how to deal with a host of issues faced online.
Claire Stead said: “Online safety should be treated just as importantly as any other issue; as children’s digital IQ increases by the year, it’s crucial that children understand the risks and dangers involved when using their devices online. But we’re not focussing purely on children today in Oxford – adults are not digital natives and so equally need to be aware of the risks too!
“We’re grateful to Rye St Antony that they’ve allowed us to come to their school to talk to adults and pupils about online issues. Having the right software solutions, discussions and training are all vital to keeping children safe on the internet. Today on Safer Internet Day it’s all about having fun, getting everyone involved and spreading the message about the importance of staying safe online.”
