Top 10 reasons why being a Young Kennel Club member is an excellent decision for any young dog lover
The Young Kennel Club (YKC) is the UK’s biggest kids club uniting all dog lovers together through competitions, dog training and fun activities! With a membership to the YKC, your youngster gets a year full of canine adventures helping them learn new skills, build confidence and make new friends through numerous dog activities in the UK.
We’ve put together list of the top 10 reasons why being a Young Kennel Club member is an excellent decision for any young dog lover:
The YKC is a fun and exciting club that accepts members from ages 6-24 year-old. Members can join at any age and grow up with likeminded dog lovers
Meet new friends (furry and human!), there's always a chance to socialise and make new friends when your child is part of a club that is always getting new members. Lifelong friendships are often formed after joining the YKC
Learn a new skill; with a number of different canine activity training days to try out, your youngster can gain new skills with their dog. Whether that’s tackling a fun and fast paced agility course or practicing their dog grooming skills – there’s plenty of activities on offer (members can choose from dog showing, flyball, obedience, junior handling, agility, grooming and heelwork to music). The YKC training days and weekends are held throughout the year where members can learn skills from professional dog handlers, trainers and senior YKC members. There are a real range from beginners and intermediate training days, and your youngster can learn from the best of the best!
The opportunity to build an even stronger bond with their dog - taking part in canine activities and spending quality time with their furry friend can strengthen the bond between dog and owner. The YKC accepts any breed of dog, whether that’s pedigree or crossbreed for the majority of canine activities – though dog showing can only be done with a pedigree
Adventures abroad – the YKC sends a junior agility team abroad to take part in the European Junior Open Championships every year. So if your child really enjoys agility with their dog and they make it onto YKC Agility Team GB they could have the opportunity to travel the globe. This year the team travelled to Luxembourg where they were up against hundreds of different dogs and their owners from all over the world!
Let’s not forget that YKC members get free tickets to the world’s biggest dog show, Crufts (in Birmingham) and Discover Dogs (in London) every year. Crufts is the world’s biggest dog, whilst Discover dogs is London’s largest, with both events having plenty on offer to interest any young dog lover and their family. Exciting competitions, fabulous trade stands and hundreds of pedigree dogs to meet & greet, these events are a must for all the family
Cost effective membership - £15 for the whole year! This is even cheaper if a sibling joins too
Monthly e-newsletter and Fetch magazine – topical and interesting reading for both parent and child including information from the dog world, competitions and more
Competing at the world’s biggest dog show, Crufts, is a dream come true for many adult dog lover. The YKC gives the opportunity for youngsters to get involved too, whether that’s stepping into the prestigious main ring or competing in the YKC ring in front of thousands of people. It is an excellent confidence boost for both child and dog, and a fun chance for them to show off their skills
Planning ahead! For when your little ones grow up, you’ll want them to be fully equipped for adulthood and the world of work. When they are in their later years (18-24), YKC members are invited to take part in Learning & Development courses (in association with Kingswood Inspired Learning). These courses encourage members to build confidence and gain important skills, such as teamwork, confidence, communication, problem solving, leadership and project management, that will help set them up in for the future. It also provides access to volunteer roles in the dog world that they can put on their CVs.
