The Big Lunch helps celebrate The Year of Young People

On Sunday, June 3, no matter where or who you are, join millions of people and get together with your neighbours in a nationwide act of community friendship.

Lenzie Academy, Glasgow, are holding a Big Lunch in June to celebrate the Academy's Community Engagement #iwill pledge, which aims to encourage as many pupils as possible to work with and for others.

The Big Lunch is the UK’s annual get-together for neighbours, an idea from the Eden Project made possible by the National Lottery. Last year more than 9 million people took part at over 96,000 community events ranging from small gatherings in gardens, parks and driveways, to larger parties with trestle tables down the middle of neighbourhood streets.

Ambitious for its future, Lenzie Academy has embraced The Big Lunch initiative as they work to a strong core vision to provide a learning environment where every young person is happy, safe and achieving their potential and playing an active part in local community life.

This year the school was also one of The Big Walk’s official walk stops, playing host to the Scotland Walker Team and enjoying the opportunity to talk about the school's values of inclusiveness and ambition.

Mandy Davidson, Acting Principal Teacher Curriculum Support (Wider Achievement), Lenzie Academy, said: “In Scotland’s Year of Young People, I wanted to ensure that Lenzie Academy's Community Engagement celebrated its first year of fulfilling our #iwill pledge to encourage as many pupils as possible to work with and for others. Holding a Big Lunch and including a Saltire Awards ceremony was a way to do this. We are not having our Big Lunch on 3rd June because there are already too many community-led events at that time. However 16th June has given our senior pupils the opportunity to help with the organisation when they return from exam leave. If The Big Lunch is the success we hope it will be, it could become an established way of annually celebrating young people in the community of Lenzie.”

Senior pupils at the school said:“I chose to volunteer because I wanted to connect with my community which is something I hadn't really done before. I wanted to make a film about the dementia friendly singing as I wanted to share something I was passionate about.”

“I think organising The Big Lunch gives us a chance for everyone to come together and connect. The Big Walk does that as well, but The Big Lunch is our celebration of our community."

The Big Walk, an idea from the Eden Project made possible by the National Lottery, launched this year on Wednesday 16 May, where four teams of walkers each embarked on a journey across the county to shine a light on some amazing groups and events that bring people together. The walkers will be making their way back to the heart of their communities in time for The Big Lunch on 3 June.
