How Much Screen Time is Too Much Screen Time? It’s time to reignite our Children’s Passion for Reading…

Recent NHS guidelines suggest that children should only have a maximum of 2 hours screen time per day, and more than this could result in negative health implications for our loved ones.

Supporting this, a recent study identified that children who spent more than two hours a day on “screen time” over the course of a two year period were at increased risk of developing high blood pressure, a major risk factor for cardiovascular diseases (CVDs).

Levels of screen time is something that we as parents need to address and change and our children are more likely to accept changes to their lifestyle if they involve the whole family.

Whilst multiple studies confirm the fundamental importance of reading to children and the positive impact that this has on their language, development and relationships with caregivers, unfortunately reading behaviours in today’s society do not reflect this.

Instead they show that only 40% of England’s 10-year olds have a positive attitude to reading (The Reading Agency) and as much as a quarter of children cannot read well by the time they leave primary school (Save the Children).

Shocked by these revelations, Adrian Dawe co-founded Bookabees in a bid to reverse the tragic downward trend with regards to the amount of books that children of today are reading.

The start up company is on a mission to help parents reduce screen time and inspire their children to read more books by offering an affordable, accessible and most importantly an exciting and completely personalised reading experience for children aged 0-11.

The books arrive directly to the child’s door every month in a completely personalised box addressed to them. The books are hand-picked by an educational expert and based on the child’s individual data: age, reading ability, likes and interests to ensure books are relevant and exciting. The boxes also include age relevant activities to inspire and engage – getting them cutting, sticking and playing.

The proof is in the pudding with a recent survey conducted by Bookabees themselves confirming that 21% of subscribers have seen a reduction in their child’s screen time and as much as 40% of parents are saying that their children are more interested and more confident in reading since joining.
