Pupils at a Wigan primary school have been using the latest in educational technology to celebrate Safer Internet Day.
Hindley All Saints C of E Primary School recently hosted a day of activities to mark the event using Discovery Education Health and Relationships – a digital programme which teaches children about healthy and happy relationships, and gives them the skills they need to stay safe online.
Now in its 19th year, Safer Internet Day is a nationwide celebration that sees schools and organisations come together to promote the safe and responsible use of technology. Organised by the UK Safer Internet Centre, the theme of this year’s event is ‘Exploring Respect and Relationships Online.’
Year 6 pupils at Hindley All Saints C of E Primary School began their Safer Internet Day celebration by learning about online identity. Using digital resources from Discovery Education, they explored how online identities can be misleading and learned how to protect themselves while using social media and gaming with friends.
Inspired by this, the children created online safety posters, using the SMART acronym:
S = Stay Safe
M = Don’t Meet Up
A = Accepting Files
R = Reliable?
T = Tell Someone
Displaying their posters around the school, the pupils shared how Discovery Education Health and Relationships supported their learning:
“Health and Relationships helps us get worries out of our system that we’ve been letting build up and it has taught me what to do when I don’t feel happy online.” said Lily, 11.
“Health and Relationships helps us to learn from online situations we have been in or we could be in. It gives us time to talk about scenarios that people our age go through,” said Alfie, 11.
Lucy Ward, Deputy Headteacher at Hindley All Saints C of E Primary School said: “It is so important to teach children how to be safe online from a young age. Children are growing up with everything online and they need to know the risks and what to do if they find themselves in an uncomfortable scenario. Discovery Education Health and Relationships has transformed how we teach our children to stay safe online. It provides them with age appropriate situations and is very relatable. It’s allowed us to have open and mature discussions and the children are now taking measures to ensure they are safer when using the internet.”
Featuring a variety of engaging digital content including videos, activities and complete lesson plans, Discovery Education Health and Relationships helps children safely manage different situations online. Designed for pupils from Foundation to Year 6 and suitable for remote or in-class teaching, the resources inspire the safe and positive use of technology and empower children to take control of their digital lives.
“Discovery Education is proud to support Hindley All Saints C of E Primary School as they teach their pupils the fundamentals of internet safety,’ said Discovery Education Managing Director of Global Initiatives Howard Lewis. “Providing pupils with engaging opportunities to learn how to stay safe online is critically important, and we are glad to offer teachers the materials to do so.”
