Creepy Characters from History to Dress Up as This Halloween
It’s the season for Trick or Treating and Halloween parties, meaning only one thing – time to dress up! Use one of these five ideas for a bit of historical costume inspiration from Primary Times.
The Mummy of Tutankhamun
This famous Eqyptian Pharaoh reigned from 1314-1324bc. He was only 9 years old when he first took the throne! He reigned until he was 19. Scientists believe he was frail and of poor health in his lifetime, but he remains one of the best-known of the Pharaohs thanks to his well-preserved mummy and the fascinating treasures found in his tomb…
You’ll need: Bandages or toilet paper, eyeliner, and a golden Nemes (the headdresses that Pharaohs wear!)
Mary Queen of Scots
Mary Stuart became the queen of Scotland when she was still a baby. She grew up hoping to become queen of England as well, but politics and religion kept Mary from claiming the English throne. She was known as Bloody Mary for her persecution of Protestants in England, and she was beheaded in 1587 after being found guilty of plotting against Queen Elizabeth I.
You’ll need: A Tudor-style dress, some fake blood, and a bucket – for your head!
Roman Gladiator
Gladiators were highly trained warriors and the celebrities of the Roman working classes. They were beloved by the masses, who would gather to watch their deadly battles as one of the biggest forms of people’s entertainment for more than 650 years.
You’ll need: A Toga, a play sword and shield, and some Gladiator sandals.
Captain of the Flying Dutchman
The Flying Dutchman is a legendary ghost ship which was said to be never be able to make it to land, doomed to sail the oceans forever. The myth is likely to have originated from the 17th-century Golden Age of the Dutch East India Company. The Captain was said to have got in trouble in a storm, and swore that he would succeed even if he had to sail until Judgment Day - now his ghost carries out his promise!
You’ll need: A fake beard, a Pirate’s Hat, and a swashbuckling sword!
Medusa
Medusa is a fictional character from Greek Mythology. She was one of the three monstrous Gorgons, they said she had snakes for hair and anyone who looked into her eyes would turn to stone! Her image is so striking and scary that she’s been depicted in countless art pieces, sculpture and pop culture for thousands of years.
You’ll need: Some green face paint, and some paper snakes!
