BE BRIGHT FOR ROAD SAFETY WEEK - shout out for safe roads for all and help save lives

Every 22 minutes someone is killed or seriously injured on a UK road. To help raise awareness of road safety and vital funds to support road victims, put on your tropical shirts, neon leg warmers or crazy coloured wigs, and be bright for Road Safety Week (14-20 November 2022).

Road crashes strike at the heart of families; 3 out of 4 deaths and serious injuries in the UK is someone under 55, and many of the victims are children, young people or parents. Organised by the charity Brake, Road Safety Week is the time when thousands of schools, organisations and communities across the country choose to speak up for road safety and can fundraise to help families devastated by road crashes.

Brake runs the National Road Victim Service which cares for around 1,000 road victim families every year who are bereaved and suffering horrendous injuries such as paralysis and brain injury. It costs around £1,200 for the National Road Victim Service to support a family for a year with vital emotional and practical support .

Brake needs your help to raise more than £1m every year to keep the service running and help families like Tina’s.

Tina’s husband was killed in a motorbike crash in April 2021, leaving her and two daughters aged 21 and 17. Her eldest daughter was with her dad at the time of the collision, following behind him on her motorbike. Tina says: “I really don't know where we would be now without the support from Brake’s National Road Victim Service.”

Mary Williams OBE, chief executive of Brake, who has twice been bereaved in road crashes, said: "Road Safety Week is for everyone, and everyone can do something to end the appalling number of deaths and catastrophic injuries every day on roads and help Brake support road victims by fundraising.

“Drivers can be bright by slowing down and looking up for people who are walking and cycling. Communities can be bright by speaking up for road safety on their local roads, such as more cycle paths. Companies can be bright by Making sure their vehicles are operated safely.

“Everyone can be bright by dressing bright on a day in Road Safety Week, raising awareness of the vulnerability of people on foot and bicycles, and raising money for Brake and the National Road Victim Service and the vital care it provides for road victims."
