Discussing Football Moments that Matter with Gary Lineker

Primary Times teams up with Gary Lineker to discuss inspirational and game-changing moments in one of Britain’s most cherished sports, Football

Sporting legend Gary Lineker OBE is regarded as one of England’s greatest strikers, holding our record for goals in Men’s FIFA world Cup tournaments, with 10 scored. The former professional footballer has also been a presenter on Match of the Day since the late 1990’s, so it’s safe to say that he holds a wealth of knowledge when it comes to British football. Now, he’s sharing some seismic soccer moments with us all in his book, 50 Times Football Changed the world, co-written with author Ivor Baddiel.

The non-fiction title is a collection championing 50 of Gary’s favourite, eye-opening, awe-inspiring and unforgettable football stories that have changed the game – and sometimes the world – forever. We asked Gary a few questions about the book and what we can expect from it…

1. What inspired you to write 50 Times Football Changed the World?

It’s no secret that I love football and there are so many hugely entertaining and inspirational people and stories tied to the world’s best sport. Bringing the very best football tales together in one book was an irresistible opportunity.

2. Who or what is your favourite person or story in this fact-packed book?

Choosing a favourite out of so many is a hard task… but one that stands out for many great reasons must be the stand against racism in football – when the players took the knee. Football is for everyone, from all walks of life.

3. Do you hope that these extraordinary football stories will inspire boys and girls to think differently about football, or sport in general?

I think it’ll be hard for the stories to not inspire readers. The sport is full of such magical stories. I hope the young readers go on and continue to use football to change the world.

4. Are there any stories in the book about your favourite team, Leicester City?

Of course! Leicester get their own story in 50 Times Football Changed the World. I don’t think I could have released a book without giving them a mention!

5. You dropped a hint that a certain tale from 2015/16 may get a mention… can you tell us more?!

Well, my team enjoyed a phenomenally good season that year but if you don’t already know that story I will let you read it in all its glory in the book! I will say that it ended with me having to make good on a bet on live TV… A lesson to have more faith in your team and not make flippant remarks in public!

50 Times Football Changed the World is now available in hardback RRP £14.99, eBook and audio.
