Back-to-School Challenges: NSPCC Scotland Offers Support and Advice for Children and Parents
As schools reopen across Scotland, many children face the challenges and anxieties that come with returning to the classroom. The NSPCC, through its Childline service, provided 2,283 counseling sessions across the UK in 2023/24 where returning to school was a key concern. More than a third of these sessions took place in August and September, highlighting the stress this time of year can bring.
Children have expressed worries about various issues, including starting a new school, academic pressures, subject selection, and the challenges of making new friends. The sudden change in routine can also add to their stress.
Alade, NSPCC Scotland Service Head of Helplines, emphasizes the importance of parents and carers being attentive and supportive during this period. "Listening to your child’s concerns is crucial," says Alade. "Encourage them to write down what they’re looking forward to at school as well as what they’re anxious about. Discussing these concerns can help them feel more prepared and positive about the new school year."
The NSPCC advises that if a young person is struggling, it's vital they speak to a trusted adult, whether that be a parent, carer, or teacher. Additionally, children can use Childline’s online mood journal to express their feelings and stay connected with friends and family, both online and in person.
Physical activity is also encouraged as a way to relieve stress. Whether it’s playing outside, going for a walk, or participating in a sport, staying active can be a beneficial outlet for children.
