Perfect for a special holiday treat, this gingerbread man recipe lets parents and kids bake, decorate, and enjoy together!
Make sure to always supervise children when baking in the kitchen. Hot ovens and sharp utensils can be dangerous, so ensure an adult is present to help with baking and decorating.
Ingredients:
πͺ 350g/12oz plain flour
πͺ 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda
πͺ 2 tsp ground ginger
πͺ 1 tsp ground cinnamon
πͺ 100g butter
πͺ 175g/6oz light brown soft sugar
πͺ 1 egg
πͺ 2 tbsp golden syrup
πͺ Writing icing (optional)
πͺ Sprinkles/currants for decorations (optional)
Instructions:
1. Sift the flour, bicarbonate of soda, ground ginger, and ground cinnamon into a large bowl. Rub in the butter until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Stir in the sugar. Beat the golden syrup into the egg and stir into the flour mixture.
2. Mix to form a dough and knead until smooth.
3. Divide into two and roll out onto a lightly floured surface to about 0.5cm thick. Using gingerbread cutters, cut out figures and place them on three greased baking sheets.
4. Bake in the oven at 190°C (375°F) gas mark 5 for 12-15 mins, until golden brown. Allow to cool.
5. Decorate the gingerbread using the writing icing and use sprinkles or currants to make eyes or buttons.
