A Must-Share World Book Day Event for Schools – Backed by the Premier League
With reading for pleasure at an all-time low - just one-third of children enjoy reading (National Literacy Trust, 2023) - we need fresh, exciting ways to re-engage pupils. Enter Premier League Primary Stars, combining football and books to inspire a love of reading.
Last year, nearly half a million children took part in the Great Big Footy & Booky Quiz - one of the UK’s biggest World Book Day events. This year, it’s back bigger and better than ever!
Event details When: 6 March at 9:30 am Who: Guest stars: Football School authors Ben Lyttelton & Alex Bellos, Host: teacher & content creator Kit Brown
What’s in store?
• A fun, 45-minute online quiz blending football and books
• Exciting school prizes & special guest appearances from footballers and World Book Day authors
• A unique chance for teachers to engage pupils, whether they’re football fans, book lovers, or both!
Why this matters
Over a quarter of 11-year-olds leave primary school without meeting the expected reading level, a challenge that disproportionately affects disadvantaged pupils. The Premier League and National Literacy Trust’s 23-year partnership is tackling this crisis through "literacy by stealth" - engaging reluctant readers through football.
The impact?
• Over half of pupils in Premier League Reading Stars report increased reading enjoyment
• 75% make at least six months’ progress in just 10 weeks
• New free resource for schools!
To build on the excitement, Premier League Primary Stars and The National Literacy Trust is launching "Becoming the Ultimate Quiz Master", a free resource to help pupils write, rehearse, and present their own quizzes - fostering confidence, creativity, and literacy skills.
