Tips on dealing with loneliness this Children’s Mental Health Week

As part of Children’s Mental Health Week, the NSPCC is highlighting ways to support young people struggling with loneliness. In 2023/24, Childline delivered nearly 5,000 counselling sessions on the issue, with common causes including bullying, social media pressures, and moving schools.

The national helpline, available to all children in the UK until their 19th birthday, is advising children and young people who are experiencing loneliness to:

• Take part in enjoyable activities: Children experiencing loneliness should engage in their hobbies like sports, music, or reading to boost their mood

• Practice self-care: When struggling, it is more important than ever that children continue to eat well, get enough sleep, and prioritise basic needs.

• Connect with others: Children can join clubs or talk to trusted friends to build social connections.

• Ask for help: Children can speak to a parent, teacher, or Childline. No child has to face loneliness alone.

• Consider signing up to Building Connections: Young people under 19 can access this online NSPCC service, which pairs them with a trained befriender to help manage loneliness.

Parents can support their children by:

• Encouraging open conversations: Create a safe space for children to share feelings.

• Helping them socialise: Explore activities or clubs to help them build friendships.

• Providing reassurance: Celebrate their achievements and remind them they’re not alone.

Childline is available 24/7 for children seeking support at 0800 1111 or childline.org.uk. For referrals to the Building Connections service, visit NSPCC Building Connections.
