Diary marker: Pupils take on outer space for Walk to School Week
Thousands of children across the UK will get ‘out of this world’ during Walk to School Week (19-23 May 2025)
Walk to School Week is organised by Living Streets, the UK charity for everyday walking as part of their National Walking Month campaign each May.
Families are encouraged to walk, wheel, cycle, scoot or ‘Park and Stride’ for the whole week to see the big differences that come from small steps, from healthier and happier children to fewer cars outside the school gates.
This year’s challenge will see pupils take on The Great Space Walk, encouraging them to travel actively to school every day of the week. Meeting colourful intergalactic friends along the way, pupils will learn about the important reasons to walk or wheel and its benefits for individuals, communities and the planet.
Last year, over 260,000 pupils and more than 900 schools across the UK took part in Walk to School Week, and this year looks to be bigger than ever.

“Walk to School Week is a fantastic opportunity for pupils to discover and celebrate the many benefits of walking to school.
“Only around 50% of pupils walk to school in the UK, so it’s also a great chance for families to give it a go and see if it’s something they can fit into their daily lives. We know that roads outside the school gates are safer and less polluted when there are fewer cars around them. Research also shows that children who exercise before school are happier and find it easier to focus. It’s a win-win!
“We can’t wait to have more families getting out into the fresh air and getting active this Walk to School Week.”
