National Literacy Trust invites schools to Go All In on music and sound for National Storytelling Week
National Storytelling Week 2026 takes place from 2 - 8 February and this year’s theme is Soundtrack Your Story.
As part of the National Year of Reading 2026 and in partnership with Amazon, the National Literacy Trust is inviting schools across the UK to Go All In on music, sound and the magic of storytelling with a series of live events and teaching resources.
National Literacy Trust research shows that only 1 in 4 children and young people enjoy writing in their free time, and writing and reading for pleasure is on the decline. Findings also highlight that exploring stories through lyrics can be an effective way to re-engage young people, suggesting National Storytelling Week can be an opportunity to create excitement around stories and tackle this decline.
Schools can join the following FREE online storytelling workshops on Tuesday 3 and Wednesday 4 February 2026. Each event is accompanied by a free teacher resource pack, which offers a flexible menu of activities to help teachers deliver an engaging musical storytelling project throughout the whole week.
• Key Stage 1/P2-3: Building stories through sound with Annemarie Anang
• Key Stage 2/P4-7: Exploring stories through rap and rhythm with Alim Kamara
• Key Stage 3/S1-3: Uncovering how music and lyrics tell stories that matter with Jeffrey Boakye
• Early Years: Rhyme, rhythm and wriggles' singalong and story time videos with poet Simon Mole and musician Gecko
This year, National Storytelling Week will be the first Go All In Together moment for the National Year of Reading. These moments are live events for schools and settings to celebrate reading and literacy, together across the UK.
