Starting School Through Pablo’s Eyes
Starting a new school can be exciting, overwhelming and completely bewildering, from unfamiliar routines and noisy corridors to making friends and trying to understand a whole new set of rules.
This autumn, Pablo Next Level, the new CBBC and BBC iPlayer series for 5–8-year-olds, explores this huge childhood milestone through the eyes of Pablo, an autistic boy starting mainstream school for the first time. The series is due to begin in early September.
A follow-up to the multi-award-winning, BAFTA-nominated Pablo, the first animated children’s series to feature an autistic central character, the new series sees Pablo use his sketchbook, creativity and imagination to make sense of school life and process the emotions that come with it.
Pablo Next Level is informed by lived experience and written and voiced by young autistic talent. The result is a funny, warm portrayal of school that gives children an opportunity to see the world from another perspective.
It also explores experiences that will be familiar to families everywhere: coping with change, finding your place, navigating friendships and learning that it can take time to feel comfortable somewhere new.
Writer Aoife Dooley hopes the programme’s use of autistic voices and real experiences will help autistic children feel less alone, while also helping classmates better understand autistic children they may meet at school.
