More Than a Swim: Samuel’s Journey of Inclusion, Confidence, and Joy

"Mornings can be tough in our house, especially school mornings. But there’s one exception: every week, without fail, Samuel leaps out of bed at 6:30am ready for his early morning swim. That energy, that joy, that unwavering determination, it all comes to life when he knows he’s heading to Poolside Manor.

"Recognising Down Syndrome means celebrating incredible individuals like Sam, and the many people who uplift, encourage, and walk beside them. It’s a reminder that inclusion isn’t just about making space, it’s about truly embracing difference and creating environments where everyone is given the chance to thrive.

"For Sam, swimming is more than just a sport. It’s freedom. It’s confidence. It’s joy. Like many children with Down Syndrome, Sam faces challenges in physical coordination and strength, but swimming offers a powerful outlet to build those skills while nurturing self-belief.

"When Sam joined swimming lessons at Poolside Manor two years ago, he was met with open arms, kindness, and belief in his potential. His instructor, Vicki, saw beyond diagnosis and focused on his ability. Her patience, encouragement, and unwavering support helped Sam reach milestones we hadn’t dared to dream of, including swimming unaided and competing in his very first swimming competition. It was proof that, with the right support, children with Down Syndrome can not only participate but excel.

"Let’s continue raising awareness, breaking down barriers, and championing the idea that all children deserve the opportunity to shine." - Jo Van Dam, Samuel’s mother.
