Gifted Student Scoops the Title of NI Young Musician of the Year
An exceptionally talented student from the EA Music Service has earned the title of NI Young Musician of the Year.
Samuel Kane (17), a Year 13 student at Portadown College, and violin student of teacher Dolores McConville, impressed judges with his performance of the second movement of the Sibelius violin concerto in D minor.
Samuel began his road to success in Cope Primary School, and continued his school-based lessons in Clounagh Junior High School. Samuel is also the leader of the South Ulster Youth Orchestra and is a member of the Ulster Youth Orchestra.
The competition, now in its 25th year, was organised by the Rotary Club of Comber and took place at Strathearn School, Belfast last Saturday. Samuel said he was "stunned" at the win.
Runner-up was Gary Hunt (17) from Campbell College, Belfast, whose interpretation of Fauré's Elégie on cello was described as ‘beautifully delivered’.
Rebecca Doherty (17) from Londonderry claimed third prize.
Winner of the prize for the best under-16 finalist was pianist Christopher McDonald (12) from St Colman's College, Newry.
