Blue Flag Success for Newry, Mourne and Down Beaches

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council is celebrating the success of its beaches in achieving Blue Flag status at the recent Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful Awards ceremony. The internationally recognised award is certified by the Foundation for Environmental Education with 45 countries taking part, awarding more than 4400 beaches, marinas and boats worldwide.

Receiving the award on behalf of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, Chairperson Councillor Roisin Mulgrew said, “The Council is delighted to have achieved Blue Flag status for three of our beaches.

“With over 100km of coastline, our Blue Flag beaches at Tyrella, Cranfield and Murlough provide an excellent opportunity to get out and explore our unique geological heritage and enjoy the many activities available.

“The Blue Flag status assures our visitors that they can enjoy beaches that are providing high water quality and a safe, accessible environment. We are very proud of our magnificent coastline and we are pleased that Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful has recognised our efforts in ensuring that our beaches are among the best anywhere.”

Ian Humphreys, Chief Executive of Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful, said, “We can turn up just about anywhere along Northern Ireland’s coastline and lough shores and know you will enjoy world beating scenery. It is thanks to the hard work of dedicated beach and marina operators achieving prestigious awards, that our experience is matched by impressive standards for facilities, cleanliness and safety that we all want and expect. The pride they take in their work is evident for us all to see when we visit our own special places.”
