Andrew Jackson cottage reopens after £250k renovation works
One of Northern Ireland's most cherished tourism attractions, The Andrew Jackson Cottage in Mid and East Antrim, is open to the public after a £250k makeover.
The Andrew Jackson Cottage, named after the 7th President of the United States is an Ulster-Scots farmhouse built in the 1750s in Boneybefore near Carrickfergus. It's where Andrew Jackson's parents lived before they left for a new life in America.
The renovation works include replacing and repairing the traditional wooden beams, restoring the façade, new paving along the outside, damp repairs including installation of new heated flooring and the restoration of the traditional thatched roof.
The art of thatching is so specific that a specialist tradesman was sourced to complete the works.
Mayor of Mid and East Antrim, Councillor Maureen Morrow said: "We're delighted with the difference these works have made to safeguard this must-see attraction. The Andrew Jackson Cottage has welcomed visitors to Mid and East Antrim since 1984 and even with the recent facelift, you still feel like you are stepping back in time when you visit this special cottage.
"These extensive works and investment from Council will add value to the cottage, the artefacts and enhance the visitor experience. The tourism sector continues to be a real success story with visitors flocking from around the world to take in our renowned attractions including the magnificent Carrickfergus Castle, the stunning Gobbins cliff path and key sites from the iconic Game of Thrones.
"This work will protect this invaluable attraction for generations to come and enjoy a real and authentic experience here in Mid and East Antrim. The Andrew Jackson Cottage is located just beside the US Rangers Museum which was renovated last year and has since featured on prime time TV shows. This Independence Day offers the perfect opportunity to explore the close heritage we share with our American neighbours."
Mid and East Antrim Borough Council are also in the process of applying for the venue to be approved for civil marriages and partnerships.
