Fermanagh and Omagh PCSP supports 'Safer Cycling' Initiative
Resources including cameras and high visibility gilets have been presented to a number of local cycling clubs from across the Fermanagh and Omagh District as part of a "Safer Cycling" initiative.
Fermanagh and Omagh Policing and Community Safety Partnership (PCSP) in conjunction with the PSNI and Cycling Ulster held the presentation event on Tuesday 21 May 2019 at the Fermanagh Lakeland Forum, Enniskillen.
In November 2018, Cycling Ireland and Cycling Ulster, after feedback from the 12 regional meetings with the Cycling Clubs in Ulster, agreed to develop and implement a "Safer Cycling" project that supported all Cycling Clubs in Northern Ireland in partnership with their local Policing and Community Safety Partnership (PCSP) and their local PSNI officers.
The project's aim was to provide invaluable resources and training to encourage new cyclists into the sport by introducing measures to ensure "Safer Cycling" for all.
First off the mark was Fermanagh and Omagh PCSP, who gave their support to the initiative.
Norman Kirkpatrick, Vice Chairperson of the Fermanagh and Omagh PCSP, speaking at the official presentation, said;
"We were pleased to be able work in partnership with the PSNI, Cycling Ulster and Cycling Ireland on their 'Safer Cycling' project which launched recently with five clubs in the Fermanagh and Omagh Council area signing up to take part.
The PCSP was able to secure funding so that cycling clubs in the council area received two high visibility gilets and a front and rear camera each.
The cameras record club spins from the front and rear and make it clear that CCTV is being used. This will enable affiliated clubs to work closer with the PSNI to deal with dangerous incidents cyclists encounter, promote courtesy and respect for all road users, and encourage cycling in a safe and appropriate manner."
Cycling Ulster hopes to work with other PCSPs in Northern Ireland and that the initiative will encourage clubs to invest in their own equipment to enhance the safety programme. The project also provides an opportunity for clubs to engage with the PCSP and the PSNI and share ideas for improving road safety and further partnership working.
The resources provided by Fermanagh and Omagh PCSP to each club include one front facing camera, one rear facing camera and two high visibility gilets with "We Use CCTV" on the back for two Ride Leaders.
